Cogito were engaged by one of the leading UK businesses with the Funeral Industry as they began their search within a range of roles. Our client already have a UK wide site coverage and were going through a period of growth, where they sought to expand their facilities within selected sites within the country, which would subsequently open opportunities for Site and Regional Managers. Our client were interested in understanding the general labour market in order for them to understand where the best source of talent is for their required roles within the UK.

Initially, it was important for our client to understand the number of potentially suitable candidates that are within each of the desired locations, and therefore we began our search for both Regional and Site Managers within the selected areas. From this we were able to approach the candidates who demonstrated interest in hearing more about this opportunity. Following this, we conducted telephone interviews with the candidates, here we were able to discuss both of the roles that the company had available and discuss which of the two they felt were better suited to them. It was at this stage that we would also ask them about their current situation – including their current employer, site(s) that they work within, the maximum amount of travel time that they would consider and if relocation was a possibility for them. These telephone interviews also helped us to identify:

  • Gender Distribution
  • Current/Previous Tenure Distribution (Years)
  • Average Time in role
  • Awareness of other business’ within the funeral industry
  • Perception of other business’ within the funeral industry
  • Importance of employer value propositions
  • Reporting Lines
  • Role likes and dislikes
  • Current/Desired Salary Distribution

Once our telephone interviews were complete, not only were we able to present our insights to our client, but we also identified a total 22 candidates who indicated that they were interested in hearing more about opportunities within the business, either immediately or when an opportunity becomes available near their location. These candidates were included in the final report that we presented to our client.

Our engagement with this client has enabled them to have a full understanding of the labour market nationwide. This research has afford our client the benefit of being able to select which sites they wish to expand with the knowledge of the level of suitable and interested candidates in each area, as well as an understanding of what they would be looking for to ensure that their proposition is an enticing one when it is time to recruit.
